What is the “VOREAS GREEN DEAL” ?
This is a declaration that we are aiming to solve the economical and environmental issues.
As an active sports team, we, VOREAS, have noticed that these issues have created discomfort so we decided to make the VOREAS GREEN DEAL declaration.
1. “The reason why we made the VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration”
How did the sports team VOREAS Hokkaido come to announce the “VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration”?…
It all started when we felt “some kind of discomfort” when we did home games and other events as a professional sports team.
Generally sports has had an image of being ‘healthy’ and ‘clean’ activities socially, and we believe it should be that way.
However, many facts were concealed in the activities of sports teams. These facts contradict the image of sports that we have.
For example, have you ever thought about the amount of “garbage” such as food and drink containers, plastic bags, and paper tickets which are produced thourgh our events yearly, and where it goes?
Also many people may not be aware of the fact very well that a large amount of “garbage” is produced when every time we hold sports event. The garbage can be the large amount of consumable materials which are used to set up the venue. Since those facts are usually hidden behind the bright image of sports.
In addition, sales booths at sporting events that have a healthy image often sell juices and high-calorie snacks that contain lots of sugar and additives.
These unhealthy and unclean materials have an impact on the “economy and society'” and “environment ” of sports and they also influence the “bodies of our team supporters”.
Are we really ok as a sports team? Is it okay to continue our economic activities that might damage the global environment and the health of our supporters? We felt such a “uneasy” feeling.
Because of this feeling we reconsidered the philosophy of Voreas Hokkaido, our mission as a sports team, and what was the right action to take.
That’s why we decided to announce the “VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration”. We will protect both the “global environment” and “the health of people”. We are going to work for the future where everyone can enjoy sports peacefully and also a sustainable future we want to leave behind.
2. “The current problem”
Right now, the world is facing all kinds of issues, including climate change due to environmental destruction and the overflow of junk food that is harmful to the health of ourselves and our families.
In order to solve these problems, various movements are happening in the world。
To begin with, solutions include the SDGs led by the United Nations, the United States’ Green New Deal and the EU’s European Green Deal. Japan has announced an aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 which was mentioned in Prime Minister Suga’s policy statement speech.
Well known big corporations like Apple have also announced that they will become carbon neutral by 2030. In fact, Google has already achieved carbon neutrality and is aiming to become carbon free by 2030 as their next goal.
However, are only large companies responsible for tackling these issues? New frameworks like SDGs should be carried out in concrete actions by all companies and local governments. This is the era for everyone to take action with even just a small step. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic change.
On the other hand, the mainstream tactic for solving global issues can be thought of as a “FAST SOLUTION”.
For example, one such solution is switching to “all-electric” vehicles by 20xx, which Japan is aiming to achieve by 2035.
However, these solutions are rather rapid and may be “forceful on the present, while skipping the process necessary to achieve the desired future”.
But these changes in both economic and natural environments must be gradual. We believe that only a few companies and individuals in “strong” economic positions can cope with those rapid changes. Many other companies and individuals may be unable to adapt to these changes which will lead to some kind of social and economic strains.
Some may say, “It is impossible to leave no one behind (it is impossible to take everyone),” It could be said that that is also the fate of innovation.
However, we are concerned with the possibility that the “FAST SOLUTION” might leave too much behind. We want to bring as many as possible into the future without leaving anyone behind.
3.”What we are aiming for”
With “VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration”, we are going to promote activities for achieving “a fair transition to a sustainable future”. That means we are trying to be moderate by simultaneously working on the two wheels of “environmental activities that improve the economy” and “economic activities that improve the environment.”
In this way, there will be no one left behind while the change happens, and everyone can recieve the benefits and move a step towards to the future.
“Environmental activities that improve the economy” means a “SLOW SOLUTION” as opposed to a “FAST SOLUTION”. It’s not the immediate stop of using products and activities which most likely will damage the environment. We are aiming to provide the means which will reduce the negative impact on the environment down to close to zero.
“Economic activities that improve the environment” means “FAST” activities which are more direct in creating a sustainable society, and activities that have more direct and positive impacts on the environment.
We want work on balancing these two activities. We won’t be alone in this mission, but would like to work with our current partner companies and supporters, as well as with as many people outside of this as possible. Therefore, we can minimise the people left behind. We aim to create a sustainable society steadily and swiftly through many more actions.
4. “The standard of VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration”
① It must be safe and reliable.② The price must be reasonable.
③ It syould be neither too convenient nor too inconvenient
④ It should meet global standards
⑤ Products syould preferably be originated from Japan and have the spirit of Japan
⑥ It should contribute to creating happiness
⑦ Can abide with the above in a way that makes us proud.
5. “Four goals of the VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration”
① We will reduce 10% of the the total usage of oil energy by partner companies by 2025“However, we will make sure this is not one-sided reductions. We will consider economic efficiency and propose alternative energy sources, make reasonable reduction plans, and achieve operational efficiency improvements.
② We will eliminate fossil fuel-derived raw materials from all Voreas products by 2030. ③ We will reduce 5% of medical expenses for all local governments where we have cooperation agreements by 2030.*This should be achived by educating partner companies and our supporters about health through health information, activities, and our products.
④ We will encourage all partner companies and our supporters to take actions related to the VOREAS GREEN DEAL by 2030.*VOREAS will dispatch the technologies of partner companies used to achieve these goals.
6. “Conclusion”
Right now times are changing dramatically. Globally, the United States’ Green New Deal and the EU’s European Green Deal are leading the way, and Japan’s Prime Minister Suga has declared that we aim to become carbon neutral by 2050 in his policy speech.
At last the time has come when all companies must treat their relationship with the global environment as a “private matter” and must tackle this issues and create a sustainable society, by coorporation with all sectors.
We have always survived through resources from the earth. We can no longer igonore the issues as if they were “someone else’s problem”.
We have left behind so many people who could have walked with us in the course of rapid economic development until now. We sometimes made excuses for ourselves by saying “There is no other way”. But we must now achieve a “Just Transition.”
“We will create a future where everyone can enjoy sports in peace.
To make this happen we will go with the “VOREAS GREEN DEAL Declaration” to carry out projects that are both “economic activities that improve the environment” and “environmental activities that improve the economy”.
We aim to create a future where no one is left behind and everyone who participates can feel their own happiness.”
How the “VOREAS GREEN DEAL” logo was made. – Increased happiness which goes beyond just mere recovery.
First, please look at the letter “V” as a time axis that moves toward the right direction. In the shadow of material development when we believed in “infinite growth”, we have lost resources and the index of happiness has dropped and are now at the deep bottom of the ravine. When we look back, we must admit that we have lost a lot.
However, by declaring the “VOREAS GREEN DEAL”, we will “recover” both economic and environmental sustainability and “grow” in a more sustainable way from now. We believe there will be happiness beyond the recovery of current situation. And that growth of happiness is one of the most important meaning we put on the logo of the “V”.
The alphabet “V” stands for the Vision for which we advocate, “V” for Victory that we should grab, “V” for Verbal that should be exchanged, “V” for Voice that has not been heard until now, and “V” for Vector that we should switch now. “V” is also the “V” of VOREAS, who keep walking while carrying these many “V”s on our shoulders.
And the “V” can be looked at like two paths stretching from the junction where we are standing at right now.
The gradation of this logo expresses the transparent and beautiful world that exists only after choosing to live in harmony with nature.
We chose to walk in the world where we can have “another growth” that we didn’t choose before.
